What Does a Prison Consultant Do?
The answer to that question depends on the specific prison consultant. Some offer more services than others. It also depends on what services are being paid for. At minimum, prison consultants offer a consultation on the prison experience, and the way to conduct yourself based on this knowledge gained "the hard way." But this is not a one-size-fits-all product. Every prison consultant has had a different experience, and they have different perceptions as to what is good and helpful advice and information. You should take the time to find out what a prison consultant chooses to focus on before paying for their services. Here at Florida Prison Consulting, we follow the emphasis of Wesley Todd who is one of the few inmates that stood up for his rights in prison (in the face of human rights abuses and corruption), and he teaches others how to do the same. This is actually the opposite of some other prison consultants whose only advice is to "lay low." Laying low is great if you have that option, but when you are in prison, sometimes trouble finds you. To "lay low" at that point would be the same as to be a victim. It is the strong belief of Florida Prison Consulting that all potential inmates should be equipped to stand up to corruption and human rights abuses by learning the administrative remedy process, proper documentation and whistleblowing, as well as government lobbying. We both teach, and actively assist people in those processes. Other than that focus, we also educate potential inmates about how to get time off their sentence, and inform them as to the necessary social skills to adapt to a detention context.
